Richard Wiegand

Richard Wiegand has worked as an air traffic controller, a newspaper photographer, and, for the last twenty-five years, as a Regional Biologist for the Maryland Natural Heritage Program, charged with the task of locating, identifying, protecting and documenting rare, threatened and endangered species and habitats in the state.

A recognized authority on the flora of the mid-Atlantic, federal, state and local government agencies, as well as private and corporate clients, have contracted his services to provide biological resource inventories and environmental impact statements for places as disparate as the Presidential retreat at Camp David, Fort Detrick, the C&O Canal National Historical Park and the entirety of Shenandoah National Park.

Wiegand completed a two year photography curriculum in Miami, Florida and studied with Dr. Szell, a close student and companion of Ansel Adams for many years.

Richards’ images have appeared in over fifty publications, several books and numerous illustrated reports.

He has provided thousands of stock photos to, among others, the websites and archives of the Smithsonian Institution, the Philadelphia Academy of Science, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, The Nature Conservancy, the World Wildlife Fund and multiple State Natural Heritage Programs.

His work has been exhibited throughout the mid-Atlantic region.

George L. Heinrich & Timothy Walsh

George L. Heinrich is a field biologist and environmental educator specializing in Florida reptiles.

A graduate of Memphis State University, his research interests focus on anthropogenic threats to Florida’s non-marine turtles. His company, Heinrich Ecological Services, is based in St. Petersburg, Florida and conducts wildlife surveys and research, natural history programming, and nature-based tours.

George is an invited member of the IUCN Tortoise and Freshwater Turtle Specialist Group, served twice as co-chair of the Gopher Tortoise Council, and is the founding president of the Florida Turtle Conservation Trust.

He has worked for a number of years on the conservation of gopher tortoises and has studied the ecology and conservation needs of diamondback terrapins as part of a University of North Florida research team since 1995.

George has received a number of awards from state and regional NGOs for his conservation work, the most recent being the Golden LEEF Award for Outstanding Contribution to Florida Environmental Education from the League of Environmental Educators in Florida.

Timothy J. Walsh became actively involved in herpetology at the age of ten and has maintained an obsession ever since.

At age twelve, he was mentored by Dr. Jim Layne of Archbold Biological Station and was co-author of his first scientific publication at age 14. Tim went on to receive a degree in Zoo Animal Technology and has worked in the zoo, aquarium and museum field since 1992. He held the position of Senior Herpetologist with the Tennessee Aquarium and as Collection Manager with the Chelonian Research Institute and has been involved in a variety of research projects with such species as Carolina diamondback terrapins, spotted turtles and Suwannee cooters.

Tim has a Masters Degree in Museum Studies with research interests in conservation education, history of natural history, and reconnecting children and adults alike with nature. He is a member of the IUCN Tortoise and Freshwater Turtle Specialist Group, an avid outdoorsman, accomplished photographer, and book collector.

Clint Pustejovsky

Houston is home to many snakes and is also where Clint’s passion for snakes began.

As a 5 year old child, Clint was reading reptile books from the local library and his elementary school, and by third grade he had read every available reptile and amphibian book.

Clint has has been studying and catching snakes, venomous and nonvenomous, from that moment to this moment.
At the age of 11, he met a local nature scientist, Dr. Robert A, Vines, who taught Clint how to catch and handle venomous snakes and better ID venomous from nonvenomous. This was 1970 and snake grabbers were not readily available as they are today, so Clint learned how to make his own grabbers, snares, hooks and pinning devices, and continued practicing and honing his skills over the years.

He received a B.S. in Communications from the University of Houston. Clint has also been featured in many newspapers, magazines and regularly asked to do television interviews.

He continues traveling around Texas entertaining and teaching audiences (companies, schools, TPWD, etc.) of all sizes and ages how to properly ID snakes, what do in case of envenomation, and overall handling and safety.

James Halfpenny

Jim is an author, scientist, educator whose interest in COLD (altitudinal, latitudinal, and seasonal) has taken him to all seven continents and Greenland.

Jim’s specialities include environmental ecology, animal tracking, and carnivores; his greatest academic love, bears, led to 20 years studying black, grizzly and polar bears. He also works with wolverine, lynx, cougar and wolves.

Jim has written over 25 books and videos including his latest, Yellowstone Bears in the Wild and Track Plates for Mammals. He led the American East Greenland expeditions in 1975 and 1976 and is a Fellow of the Explorer’s Club and received the Antarctic Service medal.

Currently Jim is President of A Naturalist’s World, an ecological education company. A past Research Fellow of the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research, Jim was Director of the Mountain Research Station and the Long-Term Ecological Research program in the Alpine. He is listed in Who’s Who in the World 1989-1993, Who’s Who in Emerging Leaders 1989-1996, Who’s Who in Western America 1987-1997 and Who’s Who In Science. A Vietnam veteran, Jim received the Navy Achievement Medal with Combat “V” and Vietnamese Gallantry Cross
with Palm.

Jim received his Ph.D. in 1980 in Biology, Ecology, & Mammalogy from the University of Colorado. His B.S. in 1969 and M.S. in 1970 both in Botany & Ecology from the University of Wyoming. At the University of Wyoming, Jim was on the President’s Academic HonorJim received his Ph.D. in 1980 in Biology, Ecology, & Mammalogy from the University of Colorado. His B.S. in 1969 and M.S. in 1970 both in Botany & Ecology from the University of Wyoming.
